What You Should Know About Low Carb Diets

Low carb diets often seen in Atkins and Zone diets have been a popular choice among most weight watchers. There are explanations behind the low carb diets and why they have a role to play in weight loss.

The Insulin Factor

It all boils down to the simple theory that high carbohydrate foods when taken in excess cause you to gain weight. The reason is simple. High-carb foods when taken will cause your blood sugar to rise quickly. The body secrets a hormone called insulin which carries the extra sugar to the liver and muscles to be stored and any excess sugar are converted to fat. If the amount of carbohydrates intake is immediately converted to sugar, there is no problem with our blood sugar level as it is in a balance mode. On the other hand, if there is an over consumption of carbohydrates food, insulin is required to work harder and more will be produced and in time to come, the insulin becomes less responsive. This leads to diabetes and other health issues.

The Fat and Protein Factor

If we consume a low carbohydrate diet, the available carbs are easily used up so the body will turn to fat and even protein for the energy it needs when the carbs sources run out. This is the basis behind the Atkins diet that promotes a low carb diet but high protein and fat component. We are aware that a diet that is rich in protein has been commonly linked to bad cholesterols and heart related complications. However, there were interesting studies to show that low carbohydrate diets are more effective than low- fat diets though the calories count are the same.

Choose Complex Carbs

Let us review the types of carbohydrates that are available. We have the simple carbs such as sweets, fizzy drinks and white bread that get digested quickly and converted to energy for use in the body. Unlike simple carbs, the digestion and conversion of complex carbs such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables are slower and you don’t get that sugar spike followed by a sugar crash. Therefore it makes sense that unrefined carbs are naturally the best choices due to its high fiber content, its low calorie along with the many antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. In fact, the very low calorie content of these fruits and vegetables is enough to result in negative calorie expenditure for the body. Thus you will lose weight no doubt about it.

Low Calorie or Low Carbs

For weight watchers, if you think that all low carb fad diet is good, you better rethink. Low carb diet is good enough if you take a conscious effort to include whole natural foods such as fruits and organic vegetables in your diet instead of following a particular low carb fad diet blindly. For example, some low carb diet recommends an extreme low percentage of carbs to calories, for example 20 per cent of the total calories consumed. Even then the carbohydrates recommended should come strictly from non-starchy vegetables. In addition, there are some low carb diets that tell you to continue eating pasta, ice-cream and cookies due to their low calorie content but these are processed foods. There are concerns that these fad diets, if followed long-term, may lead to kidney, and other health complications.

Consuming a balanced and healthy mix of food combined with regular exercise is still the most effective and safe method to lose weight permanently. The results may be slow but you can still lose weight with discipline and determination.

What’s All the Beef About a Low Carb Diet?

Does a low carb diet actually work or can it potentially be harmful to you? People who have followed a low carb diet have seen successful results. However, these individuals quickly regained their weight after stopping the diet. This should not be surprising to anyone since no specific diet will work for everyone. Let me go into detail on a few facts and difference of opinion with medical experts out there.

When we think about a low carb diet we draw a conclusion that people are eating an unhealthy diet with no fruits or vegetables and people are following a high fat pork and bacon concept since the popular Atkin’s diet was introduced. Most will validate that this is only promoting heart disease and a short life span for everyone. Now, let me address a few points about low carb diets so you can make your own decision.

1. Researchers have stated that a low carb diet has improved people with high blood pressure and individuals who are diabetic.

2. People think that low carb diets discourage people with eating fruits or vegetables. A matter of fact, fruits or vegetables are the carbohydrates eaten when on a low carb diet.

3. Low carb is often considered no carb with most people. However, most authors have never stated to stay on a low carb diet but temporary for 1-2 weeks the most.

4. I believe the carbohydrate intake should be adjusted to that specific person.

5. A low carb diet will include inadequate amount of fiber. On the contrary and there are low carb foods high in fiber.

Foods that are referred to low empty carbs are foods not rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients to make us healthier. Often people follow the quick results of a successful high fat and low carb plan. However, you will regain the weight quickly after you stop the low carb diet. The sensible choice or an adequate plan should consist of lean meats, low fat, healthy fats such as olives, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish. Results will promote more of a successful weight loss .

My thoughts and beliefs on a low carb diet would conclude it to be healthy or unhealthy depending on that person. What I mean is it depends if that person is selecting the right foods going into their body. Does that suggest we eat all beef, meat, or eggs with no fruits or vegetables in our diet? My approach is that you still need to include vegetables like broccoli, spinach, asparagus, leafy greens that contain phytonutrients or fiber that is important for everyone. When following a low carb diet it should include enriched foods rather than hot dogs, bacon, or pork as your protein intake. Choosing the correct foods is the key and eating reasonably through out the day that includes protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.

The most important question you need to ask yourself is “am i willing to make a permanent change in my lifestyle”? Making a diet change permanent is following a healthy diet. No diet out there will last if you are not ready to make those changes for yourself. When it comes down to it, the people who are successful or achieving a balanced weight have not only followed a healthy diet but included exercising in their life. So, what kind of exercise routine should I follow? Well lets leave that for another author since its time for me to grab a nutritious meal!

by size8jeans

Ten Secrets You Should Know About The Atkins Diet

One of the cornerstones of the Atkins diet is that people previously believed that if you wanted to get thinner all you had to do was eat less or reduce calories. As it turns out, according to the Atkins diet you can eat only 20 grams of carbs per day, but you are allowed to eat plenty of red meat, fish, eggs, cream, and butter. This is quite a contrast to what most people believe about dieting.

Of course the long-term data is still out on this question and many people are concerned about the long-term risks of following the Atkins diet.

The diet is based upon the fact that it is the way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat not how much fat you eat is what causes you to gain weight. The principle behind the Atkins diet is that weight loss is quicker because fat burns more calories than carbohydrates do.

Of course there are still supplements diet plans and other programs and also support that dieters can turn to to help manage their eating habits and their weight loss progress. The Atkins diet holds that people who are overweight are eating too many carbohydrates and by reducing carbohydrates that our bodies will burn the fat more effectively.

You see Dr. Atkins knew that the human body uses two types of fuel to sustain life. The first is glucose from carbohydrates. The second, ketones from fat. So basically by limiting your carbs, you force your body into breaking down the stored fat, which is what you really need to do to lose weight.

There are of course many detractors of the Atkins diet. For example there are some reports from the UK that people on the Atkins diet simply don’t feel like eating anymore. Others say that the weight loss from an Atkins diet isn’t that much different than other diets that rely on the low-fat or vegetarian diets.

Another concern is that if you lose weight too quickly because of ingesting too few calories, your body will go into a so-called starvation mode and your weight loss will either slow down or stop completely because of a change in your metabolism.

Still another concern of the detractors of the Atkins diet is that some of the foods that are restricted on a low carbohydrate diet are the same types of food that decrease inflammation for example fruits and vegetables. Also foods high in saturated fats such as butter tend to increase the body’s production of inflammatory chemicals. Some believe that replacing carbohydrates with foods that are high in saturated fats also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

But that’s just the point. The Atkins diet does not suggest or promote the ingestion of extremely unhealthy and fatty foods without moderation. Anything overdone can have unhealthy side effects.

Hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed permanent weight loss reduction using the Atkins diet method. Give it a try yourself and see if it isn’t right for you.

Usefull Info About Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is really called the Atkins nutritional approach. It was the brainchild of the doctor named Robert Atkins. He had gained a great deal of weight while he attended medical school. He read about this diet in the medical journal. He built on that diet and eventually made it popular.

Dr. Atkins had rather radical theories about the nature of weight gain as expressed in the Atkins diet. He held that saturated fats weren’t as bad as people claim. Carbohydrates, found in potatoes, and breads, were the real problem. Atkins held that our obsession with fat actually worsened the problem. Carbohydrates are used to make up for the lack of fat in low fat foods. That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were worse than they normally ate.

The Atkins diet changes this. He shifts dieters’ metabolism to burn body fats by cutting out carbohydrates from their diets. That’s the goal of weight loss. It’s not just a matter of eating less. Now it was all about what your diet can help you burn. The Atkins diet supposedly burned an extra 950 calories everyday. But the claims were not true.

Dr. Atkins also touted the positive influence this Atkins diet could have on people with type 2 diabetes. Being overweight is generally considered the major cause for type 2 diabetes. Therefore, by means of losing weight a person on the Atkins diet would be addressing their type 2 diabetes. But the Atkins diet is also low in carbohydrates, which must be avoided with type 2 diabetes regardless of caloric intake, so by means of this aspect of the diet Atkins claimed those who suffer type 2 diabetes would no longer need medication such as insulin. The jury is still out in the medical world as to the causes of type 2 diabetes. So while science agrees with Atkins that lowering intake of Carbohydrates will help with the disease, it would disagree that the step alone would remove the necessity for medicine.

So just how does this Atkins diet work? It consists of four steps or phases which are induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. The details of the induction phase are as follows.

The Induction phase is the most difficult phase of the Atkins diet. It lasts for about two weeks. During induction the dieter can consume only about 20 grams of carbohydrates on a day to day basis. The result of this phase should be ketosis; a metabolic reaction by which the body converts stored fat into fatty acids, generally prompted by a lack of glucose. Weight loss of 20 pounds over this period isn’t uncommon and that’s a staggering amount.

Learning the ideal carbohydrate levels for weight losing and for day to day intake after the weight loss ends are the purposes of the final three phases in the Atkins diet. Dr. Atkins himself died of complications of increased fat intake in his diet, which is something to keep in mind when choosing this diet.

7 Things That People Misjudge About Low Carb Diet

There are a lot of misconceptions about low-carb diets. Almost every “anti-low carb” information or news report says the same thing: reduced-carb diets don’t have enough fruits and vegetables, and even often draw an image of people eating unhealthy diet.

The reality, low-carb diets concentrate on healthy food, nutritious, and research into reducing carbs continues to show more and more positive results.

Here are the misconceptions and the truths about low-carb diets to set your own mind at easiness and help you inform others.

1. Consuming Low Carb = Courting Heart Disease

In study after study, cholesterol, blood pressure, triglycerides, and other indications for heart disease risk decline on low-carb diets. Also, in one large long term study, even low-carb diets with a lot of animal protein and fat did not raise the risk of heart disease.

2. Eating Fruits and Vegetables not Allowed on Low-Carb Diets

People believe that fruits and vegetables are not allowed because they are mainly carbohydrate.

Actually, people who take a low carb diet almost all the time eat more fruits and vegetables than usual. Instead, non-starchy vegetables are actually comes at the bottom of the low carb pyramids.

3. Low-Carb Diets will Cause Kidneys Disease

The reason is that since people with kidney disease are typically encouraged to consume low protein diets, a diet that is higher in protein will raise kidney disease.

In fact, a low-carb diet is frequently not higher in protein than the latest suggested levels.

4. Low Carb means No Carb

Many people thought that a low carb diet must be extremely low in carbohydrates.

Not even a single expert endorses this. The fact, you should have at least 45% – 65% carbohydrate depending upon individual.

5. Dr Atkins Died of His Own Diet

Despite improperly obtained medical reports mis-reported by the vegetarian group “Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine”, Dr Atkins died from head injuries resulting from a fall. He was not fat when he died

6. Low-Carb Diets Have Insufficient Fiber

The reason is, because fiber is carbohydrate, a low-carb diet must be low in fiber.

In fact, a lot of low-carb foods are high in fiber, and on diets that encourage carb counting, fiber doesn’t come into the calculation. Fiber remains undigested, so it is encouraged on low-carb diets.

7. Low-Carb Diets will “Leach” All The Calcium from Your Bones

The reasoning goes that low-carb diets are always high in protein. People on higher protein diets are likely to have more calcium in their urine. But this turns out to be a red herring. This has been proven NOT to be true. In fact, it turns out that protein, rather than cause bone loss, actually protects our bones.

What you Need to Know About the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book!

If you are a considering both your weight and nutritional health then the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book (s) can be a very valuable tool. Weight Watcher Complete Cook Books have had numerous version released over the years, with changes in recipes and the changes to match their Weight Watcher Diet Programs. This article will offer an objective review of the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Books, detailing its advantages and disadvantages and whether or not it will be useful to you.

As mentioned in the introduction there are several version of Weight Watcher Complete Cook Books available, some even date back far enough to be currently out of print. They generally come in the form of a significant number of recipes (500, give or take), which are often based in handy loose-leaf binder. The recipes you will find in the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book, no matter what version you are using, are extremely varied and cover a whole gamut of sauces, breads, soups, meats, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees, pasta, vegetable, grain, and potato side dishes, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, deserts. The meals and recipes in the book are based around healthy and nutritional principles, however they are not so different from many of the favourite foods you may already enjoy as part of your diet. The inclusion of familiar foods in the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book includes; Pizza, Oven “Fried” Chicken, Beef Stew, Tuna Noodle Casserole, Chocolate Cake and much more. There is also a great number of incredible International inspired recipes that have been adored by customers worldwide. Thus the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book’s certainly have quality and quantity in terms of recipes, however it is the nutritional focus that differentiates it from your everyday cookbook.

The best feature of the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book’s, and all Weight Watcher Cook Books, is the nutritional breakdown that is provided with each recipe. Used generally as the basis for the Weight Watcher Program (particularly the Weight Watcher Points Plan), the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book focuses on recipes that a tasty and nutritional by giving the dieter a review of the nutritional elements in each recipe (inc. the total Weight Watcher Point Value of the meal). The breakdown in the Weight Watchers Complete Cook Books includes details of the calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fibre, protein, and calcium, as well as the Weight Watcher Points. The Weight Watchers Cook Book’s are extremely balanced providing recipes for all types of dieters, whether you are a busy single professional who only has time for a quick after-work meal, or a house-wife (husband) who wants to prepare a nutritional dinner for the a family of four, this book has it all.

In addition to the bulk quality of the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book’s there are also several little features that are very beneficial:

– handy tips for use of leftovers

– the inside scoop on how Weight Watchers tamed calories and fat, while maintaining tasty meals

– helpful hints for getting meals on the table faster

– basics of related Weight Watcher Plans

Now some of the negatives for the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book. While the nutritional breakdown is extremely useful for dieters, the Weight Watcher Point Values will only be relevant if you have an understanding of the points, and generally if you are taking part of a Weight Watcher Point System plan. Furthermore many of the older versions of the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Books are now outdated due to changes that have occurred in the points system employed by Weight Watchers as the plans have changed. If you are planning on purchasing a Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book as a supplement to your Weight Watcher Plan it is recommended you ensure that it relates to the current plan you are on.

Therefore if you are after a Weight Watchers Complete Cook Book it is certainly a choice that will provide your cooking with a variety and taste equal of any cook book on the market, while also looking after your weight and health. However if you are using the Weight Watcher Complete Cook Book to supplement your Weight Watcher Plan then it is very important to ensure the version you purchase matches the plan you are currently under.
