How The Atkins Diet Works

The Atkins Diet so named for the late Dr. Atkins who created it has been around for years and is one of the most popular diets in history. Many people are both puzzled and confused by how it works. Let’s take a quick look at some of the things that the Atkins diet can do for you.

By following the Dr. Atkins’ nutritional approach to dieting as a lifestyle change you will accomplish four main things:

1. You will definitely lose weight; it is difficult for anyone who follows the Atkins diet as prescribed not to lose weight. Men and women alike who embrace the Atkins lifestyle will quickly begin to lose pounds and inches. Reaching and maintaining your optimum bodyweight is a very valuable component in any health related program because just being overweight is an indicator of potential health issues presently or in the future. Once you have lost the extra weight you will see immediate benefits and they will be much more than cosmetic.

2. Unlike many other diet programs available on the market you will maintain your weight loss. This is the area in which the Atkins Diet far surpasses most other diet programs. If you have dieted before you know how so many times you work really hard to get the weight off and then end up gaining it all back within a few months. This is normally due to the normal consequence of a low fat and low calorie diet which is hunger. The ability to tolerate hunger for short periods of time varies among people. Although many can tolerate hunger for a short time nobody can deal with it for the rest of their life. Depriving your body of food is no fun and it isn’t healthy. Once you have passed the biological gap between hunger and being satisfied the rebound and binge eating can come incredibly fast and be humiliating. This is the inherent problem with diets that restrict quantities. The difference with the Atkins Diet is that hunger is not acceptable. The plan includes foods that have enough fat and protein to prevent hunger from being an issue like it is with other diets but still allows dieters to maintain a healthy weight for the rest of their life.

3. You will achieve good health by following the Atkins Diet. The change you will undergo is nothing short of amazing. By following the Atkins Diet your nutritional needs are met with delicious, healthy, filling foods and avoiding the carbs and sugar that many foods are loaded with. This results in more energy and endurance for you not just because of the weight loss but also due to the reversal of the bad physical consequences of a dysfunctional blood sugar and insulin metabolism. When following the Atkins program you will start feeling good even before you reach your weight loss goal.

4. By following the Atkins program you will lay the permanent groundwork for preventing disease and you will change your life which is even more important that looking good on the beach.

It is very common that I read questions or statements from new Atkineers saying, “How come I feel so tired?” “Why do I have such a headache?” “I have no energy what is this diet doing to me!” One of the problems is no one forewarned them about Induction flu. Induction flu is simply the body burning its last remaining glucose and stored glycogen for energy, and suffering withdrawal effects. It is very similar to what happens when runners “hit the wall” and cyclist “bonk.” In addition to the physical withdrawal symptoms there are the mental symptoms as well. Think of drug addict, are they necessarily pleasant to be around or in high spirits even though they are doing something good. Well the carb addict has the same reaction; I personally was irritable for the first 2 or 3 weeks as I had to figure out how to eat, exert control over what entered my mouth, and regain new comfort foods. It is a dramatic change, and some people resist change. The good news is it is just temporary. It typically only last a few days, but for some the mental effects might last longer. It also shows you are on the right path and making true progress on getting rid of the excess fat. The silver lining is indeed that by the end if you continue the follow the plan you will be burning fat for fuel. You’ll have to watch the video for my suggestions on how to lessen the effects.

Diet Review: The Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet Plan was created by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960′s. He made changes to a diet he read about in the Journal of the American Medical Association, because he had his own issues with weight. After success with the diet, both for him and patients, he then wrote Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution in 1972 (which I still have), and then the revised Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. A lot of disagreement surrounds this diet, and many people have had success with it.

Atkins recommends staying away from:

Refined carbohydrates
Sugar
Flour
High fructose corn syrup
Saturated fats are not a problem, but avoid the trans fats from hydrogenated oils

There are 4 stages in the Atkins Plan:

Induction Phase:

The first phase of this low carb diet is designed to put your body into ketosis. Ketosis means that the body will produce ketones from the fat, and is used as fuel instead of carbs. It causes you to lose some weight fast as your body burns carbohydrates from your reserves. This phase is also very strict. Meat, eggs, oil and butter are allowed. A certain amount of cheese is allowed as well.

Ongoing Weight Loss:

In this phase of the Atkins plan, a carbohydrate ladder is followed by slowly building up your carbohydrate intake, you still lose, but you’re learning your glycemic intake levels, and curbing your cravings.

There is a full list of allowed food in the Atkins Diet book, but some of the food you’re allowed to have is vegetables from the Induction phase, nuts, berries, some fruit and starchy vegetables.

Pre Maintenance:

You enter pre maintenance as you approach your goal. Carbs are increased again, until you are able to eat enough without gaining weight.

Lifetime Maintenance:

A bigger range of food is allowed once you have achieved your weight loss objective. Carbohydrate consumption is increased a bit more as well. You stay at this stage for the rest of your life. Should you start to gain weight, you go back to a previous Atkins diet phase until you lose weight.

Advantages of the Atkins Plan:

If you’re a meat lover, this is the diet for you.
You’ll keep your sugar level down
You’ll burn fat
You can eat whenever you want

Things to watch out for when starting Atkins:

People say that they can’t do Atkins because it makes them feel weird, dizzy or just generally funky. Compare it to the alcoholic who has stopped drinking: they go thru DT’s – detox on some level, some have it really bad, and some don’t. You can – and should – expect a reaction with any diet that you go on that eliminates the garbage in your body.

Disadvantages of the Atkins Plan:

I’ve had friends say they get really tired, feel sick to their stomachs, and experience headaches in the beginning the Atkins Diet Plan. Carb withdrawal? I haven’t cut my carb intake too much in the recent past, so I can’t judge.

Low carb intake. I’m happy to switch to healthier carbs, but I won’t eliminate them.

Ten Secrets You Should Know About The Atkins Diet

One of the cornerstones of the Atkins diet is that people previously believed that if you wanted to get thinner all you had to do was eat less or reduce calories. As it turns out, according to the Atkins diet you can eat only 20 grams of carbs per day, but you are allowed to eat plenty of red meat, fish, eggs, cream, and butter. This is quite a contrast to what most people believe about dieting.

Of course the long-term data is still out on this question and many people are concerned about the long-term risks of following the Atkins diet.

The diet is based upon the fact that it is the way your body processes the carbohydrates you eat not how much fat you eat is what causes you to gain weight. The principle behind the Atkins diet is that weight loss is quicker because fat burns more calories than carbohydrates do.

Of course there are still supplements diet plans and other programs and also support that dieters can turn to to help manage their eating habits and their weight loss progress. The Atkins diet holds that people who are overweight are eating too many carbohydrates and by reducing carbohydrates that our bodies will burn the fat more effectively.

You see Dr. Atkins knew that the human body uses two types of fuel to sustain life. The first is glucose from carbohydrates. The second, ketones from fat. So basically by limiting your carbs, you force your body into breaking down the stored fat, which is what you really need to do to lose weight.

There are of course many detractors of the Atkins diet. For example there are some reports from the UK that people on the Atkins diet simply don’t feel like eating anymore. Others say that the weight loss from an Atkins diet isn’t that much different than other diets that rely on the low-fat or vegetarian diets.

Another concern is that if you lose weight too quickly because of ingesting too few calories, your body will go into a so-called starvation mode and your weight loss will either slow down or stop completely because of a change in your metabolism.

Still another concern of the detractors of the Atkins diet is that some of the foods that are restricted on a low carbohydrate diet are the same types of food that decrease inflammation for example fruits and vegetables. Also foods high in saturated fats such as butter tend to increase the body’s production of inflammatory chemicals. Some believe that replacing carbohydrates with foods that are high in saturated fats also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

But that’s just the point. The Atkins diet does not suggest or promote the ingestion of extremely unhealthy and fatty foods without moderation. Anything overdone can have unhealthy side effects.

Atkins Diet – Low Carb

Statistic: 61% of people in the United States are overweight. Weight loss is more than cosmetic — it can have a major affect on your health.

People diet for two primary reasons, to lose weight, or to improve health–or both. If there’s one thing we can always count on almost automatically from most media coverage of people who have lost weight on the low-carb lifestyle is they’re just gonna get it wrong.

I tried low-fat, South Beach, Hellers, Eades, and Nutri-System, as well as and none of them has worked. The popularity of low-carbohydrate diets has introduced questions of safety for long-term weight management.

Dieters following Atkins diet are encouraged to stick with the fourth phase of Atkins diet for life, to remain healthy and avoid gaining weight. While it has been asserted that it is too early to promote low carbohydrate or carb low diets, there is a general acceptance amongst health professionals that further research is warranted.

The only weight-control regimens that work for life require both eating in moderation and exercise. Actually Atkins is sort of a “Welcome to the wonderful world of 20 grams of pasta per day” because that’s how much you’re going to get.

As soon as you lose control and started eating carbohydrates again, the weight comes back. Atkins has gained increased popularity in the past several years, and seem to offer a quick and easy weight-loss fix.

Many low glycemic index foods, like apple juice, chocolate and cherries, should not be eaten if your goal is to lose weight. Dieters are at risk of developing other ailments while in the process of trying to lose weight. Atkins is based on the belief that diets high in sugar and other refined carbohydrates increase the production of insulin, a hormone that stimulates the storage of calories as fat.

Studies have shown that many people have achieved short term weight loss results from using Atkins.. Additional research has shown that during the ongoing weight loss phase, Atkins dieters consumed only 1500 calories a day on average, much less than their previous caloric intake.

Ask your friends, ask your peers, find others with whom you can share recipes, success stories and the great fun that comes from losing weight the Dr. Atkins diet plan way. The program promises up to 9 pounds every 11 days, but most people will lose about 6-8 pounds in that time if the program is followed correctly. That said, a high-fat diet does carry an inherent metabolic disadvantage in that fat has nine calories per gram, while carbohydrates and protein each have four.

Scientists in the past have suspected that the weight loss seen in people on the Atkins diet is mainly due to water weight loss or a stepped up metabolism. Atkins’ diet can lead to the kind of rapid weight fluctuations that adversely affect the heart. The modified Atkins diet does increase total cholesterol and the discontinuation rate was high.

I lost 30 pounds in three months. I’m not an expert, but I do speak from experience. Most of this, I learned on my own or through close friends and family members. Strip That Fat

Atkins Diet Foods For You

Atkins diet is easy to find and available worldwide. There are many varieties to choose, pick up packages if the diet low carbohydrate foods or make your own meals. Whatever you want to do the Atkins plan, there is a solution here for you. Youll need to keep the Atkins food pyramid in mind when the food choices. Atkins pyramid seems very different from the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. The base of the pyramid consists of protein sources such as eggs, fish, meat, chicken and tofu. On a daily basis, your diet should consist primarily of these foods. The second level has low blood sugar, such as salad greens, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and spinach. The third level consists of berries and avocado. The fruit must be used on an occasional basis after the initial phase of the Atkins diet. And vegetable seed oils, cheese, dairy products, nuts and legumes are used sparingly and in portions. While the FDA pyramid has oils and fats in the high peak, the Atkins pyramid places whole grain foods in this field. The whole grain foods should be used sparingly and do not constitute the essence of the Atkins diet. When you start the Atkins plan, youll need to make sure you understand which foods are acceptable for your stage of the program. The induction phase is the most restrictive, but lasted only two weeks. You must succeed in their diet to stay on the list of acceptable foods. One of the best ways to do this is to follow the Atkins menu plans that are printed in the New Diet Revolution book. There are also Atkins cookbooks and cookbooks that are geared toward other low carb diets that are helpful in formulating meal plans. It is a useful idea to use a cheat sheet of acceptable Atkins foods wherever you go. If you are on and hunger, the last thing he wants to do is try to think about your memory to know what can and can not eat. Bring a list of foods that are looking for a meal or snack, while the difficult period. You can not always rely on the labels of low-carb to say whether the diet is something friendly. Since becoming a diet low in carbohydrates fashion, manufacturers have jumped on the train to attract Atkins diet. Label weaknesses carb to sell products and do not take into account their health. Based on the food of their own is the best way to stay in the plan. Another good resource for monitoring the appropriate Atkins foods is a diet program. There are several available. Some are free and some have a small monthly fee. These programs require a registration and then provide them with personal weekly menu plans based on your needs and your level of grams of carbohydrates. There are usually printed weekly lists that collect your Atkins diet grocery store easy and quick. Atkins diet food is easy to find, once you know what you’re looking for. Books, food pyramid and online resources can help you make better food choices and stay on the diet long term.

I deal with the question by a viewer who like I was sick of eggs and bacon, and was looking for alternative breakfast items. My criteria for a good low carb breakfast is: * has to be quick to make * has to be easy to make * has to provide enough nutrition for morning activities and mid day exercise I also suggest the valuable step of prepping for breakfast the night or the week before by chopping the vegetables or cooking the meat beforehand to expand your options. With that in mind, there are countless options for the 5-minute or less breakfast meals. I highlight my favorite 5: * Taco or Fajita Salad * Low Carb Stir Fry * Sausage Broccoli Quiche * Upside Down Low Carb Pizza * Pancakes and Syrup

The Atkins Diet – the Origin of Low Carb Diets

The Atkins Nutritional approach has been used nationally since the 1960′s. Long before Dr. Robert Atkins published his popular low-carbohydrate diet plan, his patients were reaping the benefits of the Atkins diet.

Dr. Atkins divided his meal plan into four phases. “Induction,” phase one, is designed to force the body into ketosis, a physical condition which occurs in response to starvation. The “ketogenic” diet is widely used in medicine not only to treat obesity, but also to treat conditions such as epilepsy and diabetes. During this particular two-week period, no alcohol or caffeine can be consumed.

The second phase, “Ongoing Weight Loss,” is geared toward finding the “Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing.” This process involves increasing the carb intake by five grams per week until the subject a person is within 10 pounds of their target weight.

“Pre-maintenance” is the next step. Like phase two, this phase calls for an increase in carb intake, the difference between the two phases being that this phase is designed to find the “Critical Carbohydrate Level for Maintenance.”

Step four is “Lifetime Maintenance,” a phase intended to reinforce the habits learned through the diet plan so as not to regain the weight lost during the diet. Dr. Atkins also emphasizes making use of the option to jump back to any of the other phases if weight begins to return.

While many testimonials of success have been recorded, the Atkins diet has been under fire in recent years as more and more analysis is conducted. Recent studies have compared Atkins to other diet plans and found that it scores among the highest for short-term weight loss but ranks as the lowest for long-term weight loss. And after Atkins Nutrionals released their line of Atkins diet bars and meals, Forbes Magazine analyzed several diets and found that the average consumer would pay up to 80% more in food costs than people not on the diet. Even when faced with these facts, many still sing praises of the Atkins diet.

Both the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Medicine confirmed that Atkins is still the most effective published diet plan for short-term weight loss. They do, however, acknowledge that it does come at greater risk for coronary heart disease. As for weighing out the pros and cons to determine exactly how much more at risk those who participate in the Atkins diet are, all reports found that no evidence documented has yet to prove that the risks are greater than the benefits.

Nearly forty years later, the late Dr. Atkins is still recognized for his approach to weight loss. Thanks to the innovation of the internet, Atkins meal plans, Atkins diet bars, Atkins recipes, magazine articles and research regarding Atkins and virtually anything else associated with the Atkins diet has never been easier to access.

Pros and Cons of the Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is one of the most popular low carbohydrate diets on the market today. Its popularity has sparked dozens of look-a-like diets who center on the same principles of high-protein, low-carbohydrate eating. There are a lot of fish in the sea when it comes to choosing a low-carbohydrate plan.

Studies have shown that low-carbohydrate eating has many benefits. There have been scientific results that low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins do create significant weight loss without having to restrict calories. People who use the Atkins diet have also reported this. There are studies that show that low-carb eating improves triclycerides, reduces blood glucose for diabetics and pre-diabetics and increases good cholesterol (HDL). Low-carbohydrate dieting has been scientifically proven to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease blood pressure and lower blood insulin levels. When compared with low-fat diets, low-carb dieters lose less muscle mass.

Although not scientifically proven, there are many common benefits reported by Atkins dieters and other low-carb dieters. These include an increase in energy, a reduced craving for sweets, better concentration, improved mood and an lessening of depression type symptoms.

However, there are also some benefits that are specific to the Atkins diet. If you have been a low fat dieter in previous years, you’ll enjoy eating all of those “forbidden foods” that you once had to go without. Steak, butter and cream are a regular part of Atkins dieters’ meals. There is a certain pleasure that goes along with eating foods that were once off limits. Atkins dieters are encouraged to eat their full of rich meats, cheeses and fats and oils.

Atkins is also simple to use, compared with some other low-carb diets on the market. There are some basic food carbohydrate counts that you’ll need to learn, but after that, you are free to eat from the acceptable food lists.

Dr. Atkins also emphasized finding your own personal carbohydrate level. Different people have different levels of carbohydrate tolerance. While some gain weight on just 90 carbohydrate grams a day, others can live comfortably at 120 carbohydrate grams. During the ongoing weight loss phase and pre-maintenance phase of the diet, you will learn your personal carbohydrate count that will help determine your carbohydrate goal for life.

The popularity of Atkins is a double-edged sword for dieters. There is a lot of information available on the diet, which makes it easy to find resources and support. There have been many, many Atkins books written and there are endless amounts of websites that offer tips and group support. However, everyone has heard of Atkins and probably has an opinion on it. There are some big misconceptions out there about the nature of the diet, and you’ll no doubt have to defend your new way of eating from time to time.

There are some other minimal downsides to using the Atkins program. You do need to count carbohydrates in everything you eat to make sure that you are staying within your personal carbohydrate range. There is also the issue of Induction, the most hotly debate aspect of the plan. Induction can be difficult to get through if you’ve had a diet that centers on carbs and sugar. Also, many people try Induction and mistakenly believe that this is the way that the whole diet is going to be. They end up quitting before they get into the actual Atkins plan.

Sometimes, although it is not common, people will experience a carb crash on the 3rd to 5th day of the diet. This reaction is a result of their body finally experiencing ketosis, or running on fat instead of carbohydrates. The effects are transient, but many people have sworn off low-carb diets entirely because of this happenstance.

Overall, with the minor drawbacks considered, Atkins is one of the most popular low-carb diets for a reason. It works. Thousands of people have had success with the Atkins approach to the low-carb way of living.

Acceptable Foods for the Atkins Diet

Dr. Robert Atkins first introduced the Atkins Diet to the world in the 1960′s. Though it dropped off in popularity, it made a comeback in the 1990′s following the publishing of a best-selling book by Dr. Atkins. The Atkins Diet is essentially a diet that focuses on the consumption of little to no carbohydrates, and higher levels of proteins and fats.

Since the human body typically uses carbohydrates as a primary source of energy for the body’s basic functions, ideally a diet that is low in carbohydrates will cause the body to look elsewhere for a source of energy.

With restrictions placed on the consumption of carbohydrates, the body has no choice but to metabolize fats in order to produce energy. The process by which the body metabolizes fats in order to produce energy is known as ketosis. In order to maintain ketosis and keep the body burning fats, individuals who are taking part in the Atkins Diet need to be careful about the food they consume during their daily meals.

High levels of carbohydrates will interfere with ketosis, as the body will return to breaking down the carbohydrates in order to produce energy. When it comes to the foods that are acceptable for the Atkins Diet, individuals are expected to consume foods that are low in carbohydrates, which typically means not eating foods high in sugars and starches.

Generally, the Atkins diet approves the consumption of proteins and fats. Additionally, participants are allowed to eat all the meat, poultry, fish, and cheeses they want. Condiments that are high in fat are also given the okay under Atkins, as are sour cream and guacamole.

In terms of specific foods that are deemed acceptable under the Atkins diet, participants are given a variety of choices. In fact, the basic premise of the Atkins diet is that individual participants can eat just about any food they want, so long as it is low is carbohydrates.

Lovers of fish will find that just about all types of fish are accepted under the Atkins diet, including tuna, salmon, flounder, and sardines, to name a few. Fans of fowl will find that items like turkey, chicken, duck, quail and pheasant are all also acceptable food under the Atkins diet.

The choices to not end there though, as shellfish like oysters, clams, squid, shrimp, and crabmeat are also a big part of the Atkins diet. Additionally, all forms of meat including beef, pork, lamb, veal and venison are also on the list of foods that the Atkins diet deems acceptable.

Eggs cooked in just about every form are also on the list of acceptable foods under Atkins. Despite the perceptions, the Atkins diet does allow for the consumption of some amount of carbohydrate on a daily basis.

Many times, these carbohydrates are obtained by consuming small amounts of vegetables like celery, radishes, chives, snow peas, broccoli, and spinach. Atkins also has acceptable beverages.

Since most of today’s drinks contain some sort of sugar-based sweetener or some type of fruit juice that is itself high in carbohydrates, the Atkins diet recommends that participants consume drinks that are artificially sweetened with products like Splenda. Additionally, teas, some juices, and diet sodas are all beverages that are considered acceptable under the Atkins diet.
